The Advanced Training Institute (ATI, Chennai) was sestablished in 1968 under the aegis of Directorate General of Employment & Training (DGE&T) Ministry of Labour & Employment, Government of India, New Delhi with the assistance from United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) / International Labour Organisation (ILO) to impart training and upgrading the skills of Engineers / Supervisors / Technicians / Executives of Industrial personnel & facilities of educational institutions through courses of short duration conducted in modules & Tailormade courses as per the specific needs of their industries / Govt. estt. / PSUs / Technical Institutions. the courses are conducted for higher skill upgradation through intensive skill oriented training by using the latest version of equipment and machinery used in industry.

          The institute has state of art infrastructure in 13 trades disciplines apart from highly qualified, well trained and highly motivated training faculty to provide training comparable to any international standards in Vocational training.

          The institute has been upgrades as Centre Of Excellence (CoE) under World bank assisted VTIP to train the Instructors of Government ITIs.

          The Campus also Houses Central Training Institute (CTI), National Instructional Media Institute (NIMI), Regional Directorate of Apprenticeship Training (RDAT) and Vocational Rehabilitation Centre (VRC) apart from Union Bank of India.

          ATI is located in a campus of 20 acres at Guindy Industrial Estate in the heart of Chennai city surrounded by various Micro, Small and Medium industries and as well as reputed institutions like IIT, Anna University, MSME, NSIC etc.
          
          The institute is situated opposite to Guindy Railway Station and it is 13 kms away from Chennai Cenral Railway Station and 5 kms away from Chennai International Airport. It is also well connected by Road / Rail from other parts of country.
